People often ask should they continue on from Salta or Tafi/Tucuman to Mendoza or Cordoba. I always tell them Mendoza - I can't see a reason to go to Cordoba. The scenery has been hyped around the Sierras but after the mountains and pre-puna, it is nothing special. Yesterday we drove from Buenos Aires to just north of Cordoba and a place called Jesus Maria - or JESUS, Maria, are there any hotels anywhere?? Anyone used to driving in Europe or the States, is used to seeing stops on the route - some very delicious ones if you happen to be in France. Argentina is empty. Arriving in Cordoba half dead from driving, you discover a major lack of hotels. Anything decent all full, everything else really dire. I realise how fortunate we are in Salta and Jujuy to have such excellent hospedaje options.
Driving on single lane 'highways' is tough with so many huge trucks bearing down on you. It's especially tough at night. They are pretty cheeky to charge every few miles for a road so undeveloped. And then there are the birds. Driving through many hundreds of kilometres of plains, field of soys and maize is very tiring so the birds keep you entertained by taking off from the long grass verges as you pass and swooping into your windscreen. I must have killed an entire flock - Even Hitchcock would not have imagined it.
